Even more impressively–these soldiers over the years did not really die for their friends, not friends they knew, but for the idea of us as their friends. Of course, they did support and fight thinking, at least subconsciously, for “their friends,” but their sacrifice came for us as strangers. Yet another reason why we should stand in Memorial today (and other days too)!!!
